The Miniature Student Room in the 1970s

1970s, 1:12 scale

University of Tartu Museum - Permanent Exhibition “The University of Our Lives” 2019

This handcrafted miniature diorama recreates a student room in Tartu during the 1970s, capturing the modest and personal living environment of a young person studying in Soviet-era Estonia.

The interior is filled with period-inspired furniture, textiles, artwork, books, and everyday objects, creating the feeling of a small but lived-in student home. Warm lighting and carefully placed details add to the intimate atmosphere of the room.

Beyond the window, the miniature world continues through an animated video backdrop of 1970s Tartu. These small animated moments bring movement, humour, and storytelling into the otherwise still miniature scene, blurring the line between a physical diorama and a living world beyond it.
