The Miniature Orthodox Church
19th century, 1:25 scale
Bomarsund Visitor Center - Permanent exhibition "The History of Bomarsund” 2026
This miniature interior brings to life a moment of religious life at Bomarsund Fortress, depicting an Easter service inside the Orthodox church that served the fortress community in the mid-19th century.
The scene captures a solemn moment during the service, with soldiers, officers, and their families gathered inside the church. The priest moves among the congregation with a censer, filling the space with incense as worshippers stand together in prayer. The interior is illuminated by the warm glow of candles, creating an intimate and ceremonial atmosphere.
My work focused on bringing richness and authenticity to the church interior through its smallest details — from miniature furnishings and liturgical objects to figurines and the elaborate iconostasis that forms the visual centerpiece of the space.
Most of the elements were designed and crafted based on historical drawings and reference materials of the Orthodox Church at Bomarsund Fortress provided by the client, helping to recreate its 19th-century interior as faithfully as possible.
